Johannesburg - Suzuki has given its Ertiga MPV a mid-life makeover that extends as far as simplifying the range from four derivatives to three.

But what you’ll see first is a new, chunkier grille and more deeply sculpted front bumper, with chromed highlights on GL models. That’s echoed in the revised rear bumper with integrated reflectors - and again there’s a new chromed trim strip with an embossed script above the numberplate on GL versions.

Colour-coded electrically adjustable and folding side mirrors - standard across the range - and new wheel covers complete the exterior upgrades.

Inside, there’s new, more luxurious fabric on the upholstery and door panels, and the GL’s sudio system has been upgraded according to feedback from Ertiga owners. Bluetooth connectivity is now standard which, along with the WHICH, along with the MP3, USB and iPod integration it already had, means you can now access virtually any audio source as well as make hands-free telephone calls.

More new kit on the GL model includes rear parking sensors, an additional 12V socket in the middle console behind the front seats and a 50:50 split seat-back on the third row of seats, rather than folding as one unit when extra luggage capacity is needed.

And, in response to requests from owners, the Ertiga is now rated to tow 550kg, and there’s a tow-bar available as an option.

STREAMLINED RANGE

Since a lot of what was special about the range-topping GLX derivative is now standard issue in the GL, Suzuki has streamlined the range down to the entry-level GA, the GL and the GL automatic.

The rest of the good stuff stays the same, including the immobiliser, air conditioning, electric power steering, two airbags, ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution, alarm system, rake adjustable steering column and electric windows.

Each Ertiga comes with a 1.4-litre petrol four, rated for 70kW at 6000 revs and 130Nm at 4000rpm, at a nominal cost under laboratory conditions of 6.6 litres per 100km, driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual or four-speed auto ‘box.

Also unchanged is the Ertiga’s three-year or 100 000km warranty and four-year or 60 000km service plan.
