Subaru has taken some swift action to avoid putting any of its customers through an 'unintended acceleration' nightmare.

The company is recalling just over 10 000 of its '2014 model year' US-market Forester wagons because the floor mats can interfere with the clutch, brake or accelerator pedals.

However, there's no reason for South Africans to rush to the dealer because the floor mats on our models are different and are produced by a local supplier, a Subaru SA spokesperson confirmed.

The overseas recall affects Foresters made from January 2013 through March and the company says the floor mats can curl when exposed to heat.

The problem was discovered in cars arriving at a port in Vancouver, Washington. A company spokesman said Monday that Subaru knows of no crashes or injuries caused by the defective mats.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the mats could distract the driver or interfere with operation of the car.
