Cardwell, Montana - Tesla is under pressure after a second of its self-driving cars crashed – two months after an owner died when his autopilot failed to detect a vehicle.

The US firm has confirmed its autopilot function was activated when one of its cars crashed on Sunday in the latest setback for its self-drive programme.

However, the electric car maker has suggested that the function was not being used correctly at the time.

The motorist survived the accident near Cardwell, Montana, when the car apparently swerved and hit a wooden post by the side of the road.

US safety officials are currently investigating the death of 40-year-old Joshua Brown of Canton, Ohio, on May 7 in Florida.

Tesla says the cameras on his Model S saloon failed to distinguish the white side of a turning tractor-trailer from a brightly lit sky and didn’t brake automatically. Chief executive Elon Musk said Tesla had no plans to disable the autopilot.

However, he told the Wall Street Journal that his company would publish a blog highlighting how drivers should make use of the technology.

He also tweeted that it was right that Tesla should be “taking the heat for customer safety”.
