Cape Town - The matriculant who drove a bus of fellow learners to an important exam after the driver failed to show up, has passed his Code 14 (Heavy Vehicles) learner’s test.

It was a case of third time lucky for Le-Aan Adonis, 20, who passed the test on December 3 after two previous failures.

According to Le-Aan, this time he had a lucky omen on his way to write the test in Caledon.

Le-Aan says: “A traffic cop dropped his fine book and I picked it up and returned it to him.

“I thought it must surely bring me luck.

“I was done first and when they told me I passed I just couldn’t keep it in and made a big noise.”

He had a special thanks for Sydney Armoed, co-owner of Sydney’s Driving School who gave Le-Aan free tutoring and driving lessons to one day get his Code 14 driving licence after reading about the young man in the Daily Voice.

Le-Aan made headlines when he got behind the wheel of their school bus on November 2, to ensure he and 11 other Hawston Secondary School matriculants from Kleinmond were in time for their Maths Literacy exam.

BIG FINE PAID FOR

A traffic officer pulled Le-Aan over to the school, and wrote him a fine.

Former Western Cape police commissioner Advocate Lennit Max offered to defend Le-Aan free of charge, his fine of R5000 was slashed in half by the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office, and businessman Willie Malherbe of Gordon’s Bay paid it.

While some see Le-Aan as a hero, he says he only did it for his and his fellow learners’ future.

“I’m not so good at Math but I just thought about the others whose marks would be affected by not writing.

“And in the end everything seems to have worked out well,” says a grateful Le-Aan.
