Johannesburg - The Congress of South African Trade Unions on Monday said it would embark on protests against toll fee increases in Mpumalanga.

Cosatu spokesman Fidel Mlombo said the trade union federation would stage pickets and demonstrations against the “extorbitant rates” at the province's three toll plazas.

“Cosatu has been against the privatisation of public roads as a form of the delivery of basic services since its formation,” Mlombo said.

“The protest actions are part of the Cosatu campaign for safe, affordable, accessible and efficient public transport. We also call for the total scrapping of the toll gates in the province.”

The protests would be held at Middelburg, Nkomazi and Ermelo toll plazas, he said.
