If you're despicable enough to get drunk and steal a car, just make sure you don't crash it into a police station.
A drunk New Zealand man allegedly stole a car and crashed it into the brick wall of an Auckland police station in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police said the driver and his female companion made a run for it after the crash, only to be discovered by police officers a short distance away.
"The driver suffered a minor head injury and the police station has some cracks today that didn't exist yesterday," said Auckland city district commander Superintendent Richard Chambers.
He said the fact that a young unlicensed man was out and about on city roads allegedly in a stolen vehicle while intoxicated was no laughing matter.
The 20-year-old man was to appear in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday charged offences including resisting police, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, excess breath alcohol and being an unlicensed driver.
