Johannesburg - A Gauteng woman was left critically injured after the car she was travelling in flew through the air and crashed into a wall, paramedics said on Monday.

The crashed happened on Rivonia Road in Sandton in the early hours of Sunday morning. Video footage capturing the incident shows an Audi TT approaching at a high speed before flying through the air and crashing through a signpost and then hitting a wall.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring explaining that paramedics were alerted to the incident at around 5.15am.

"Upon arrival, paramedics found a wrecked performance vehicle lying next to a wall. The body of a woman was found lying a short distance behind the vehicle. Paramedics assessed the woman and found that she had sustained numerous injuries and was in a critical condition."

She was then treated on the scene and transported to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for urgent care. It's not clear at this stage if the woman, believed to be in her 20s, was the driver of the car or a passenger.
