Cernobbio, Italy - Have you ever wondered what a modern version of BMW's legendary 2002 turbo would look like? Of course you have, and so has BMW, which is why we now have the 2002 Hommage concept.

BMW revealed this one-off concept car at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on the scenic shoreline of Lake Como over the weekend, and it follows a long line of 'Hommage' concepts that BMW has shown off at the event in recent years, including last year's 3.0 CSL Hommage and the 328 Hommage of 2011.

It was only a matter of time before BMW's creatives reimagined the 2002 turbo, which regarded as one of the most legendary BMWs of all time. It was also an early pioneer of turbo technology, and according to BMW it was Europe's first series-produced turbo-powered car when it hit the streets in the early seventies.

"The Hommage car brings together the past and future of BMW into a confident statement of unadulterated driving joy," says BMW's head of design Karim Habib.

Although the window lines of the Hommage concept give away that it's based on the latest 2-Series, the rest of the design is a modern interpretation of the original 2002 turbo, paying 'Hommage' with distinctly 2002-inspired front and rear styling as well as bulging wheel arches, wrap-around shoulderline band and bi-colour wheels.

BMW has not gone into detail on the Concept's mechanical content, preferring to keep the focus on its design, but it is reportedly built around the 272kW BMW M2, as a modern 2002 turbo should be.
