Lotus' new, mid-engined 2+2 sports car, known at this stage only by its project code Eagle, will debut at the British international auto show on July 22.

That's also when its official name will be announced - and it was - glorying in the name Evora.

"The company says it's the only mid-engined 2+2 in production and has been styled in-house by Lotus with a cab-forward layout that disguises its four-seater interior, - although it admits that the rear seats are only intended for children or small adults on short journeys."

It will also be available as a two-seater with a parcel shelf - and a high-performamce derivative is planned.

The car has a 205kW, 3.5-litre, V6 Toyota engine and Lotus engineers say it's faster around the daunting Nurburgring than the Elise and more stable at speed than the Exige.

Yet it's more road-orientated than either and comes with leather trim, carpets(!), aircon and a sophisticated Alpine audio/satnav system with a 180mm touch-screen.

The fascia contrasts hand-stitched leather panels with aluminium inserts, flush-mounted controls with blue LED lighting, stylised and easy-to-read instruments and a remote-release glove box.

Deliveries will begin in the second quarter of 2009; planned production is only 2000 a year. Lotus has outlets in South Africa - keep your fingers crossed.
