Johannesburg - Toyota South Africa has given its top-selling Hilux bakkie a boost with a new look for the upper half of the range, additional features as well as an expanded range of ‘workhorse’ models, including lower-priced double cabs.
NEW LOOK
The new front end ‘facelift’ applies only to SRX and Raider models - which get a version of the new bumper and grille design that was first introduced in the limited edition Hilux Dakar.
The Raider’s grille gets additional chrome detailing. Bling. Bling.
Talking Dakar, its Inferno Orange exterior paint hue is now offered across the Hilux range.
ADDED FEATURES
Both models also receive a features upgrade, with the SRX gaining a touchscreen infotainment system (previously only fitted to the Raider), which also includes a reverse camera.
As before, 2.4 GD-6 SRX models are fitted with 17-inch alloys, aircon, power windows, three airbags (including driver kneebag), Traction Control and Trailer Sway Control. This variant is now also available with a six-speed automatic gearbox in rear-wheel-drive guise.
The 2.8 GD-6 Raider derivatives inherit a new full-black interior from the Dakar - including black headliner and metallic-black interior trim - while the touchscreen interface has been upgraded to include a reverse camera and DVD playback compatibility.
Standard spec includes 18-inch alloys, auto climate control, cruise control, leather steering wheel and seven airbags.
ADDED ‘UTILITY’ MODELS
While the lower end of the range forgoes the new ‘Dakar’ look, a number of new derivatives have been added.
The double cab body style becomes more accessible with the addition of new S derivatives (2.7 petrol and 2.4 GD-6 diesel, while the 2.4 GD-6 SR (previously only 4x4) is now available in 4x2 guise. Pricing starts at R385 100 - see full list below the article.
These models are all about utility, featuring black bumpers, 17-inch steel wheels and PVC interior trim, but they do pack the basic luxury and safety features such as aircon, power windows, three airbags, ABS and Traction Control. SR adds Toyota’s Display Audio sound system and additional safety kit in the form of Active Traction Control and Trailer Sway Control.
Furthermore, an extra ‘Xtra’ cab derivative joins the range in the form of a 2.4 GD-6 SRX 4x2 six-speed automatic.
On the single cab front, the 2.4 GD-6 SRX 4x2 is now available in six-speed automatic guise, while the ‘mining friendly’ 2.4 GD-6 SR is now available as a 4x2. The 2.7 SRX falls away.
But for the most serious of workers, three chassis cab models have been added to the Hilux range: 2.0 workhorse, 2.4 GD-6 workhorse and 2.4 GD-6 6MT SRX 4x4.
