Nostalgia, they say, isn't what it used to be - but the 1960's came rushing back for Sir Stirling Moss when he was re-united with the Ferrari 250GT SWB in which he won the 1961 Tourist Trophy race at Goodwood.

It was a golden era of motorsport, when the British "patrons", wealthy privateer race team owners such as Rob Walker, the owner of this car, took on the factory teams - and often won.

Moss recalled: "He was the most wonderful man. In his passport, where it used to ask for one's occupation, he simply wrote 'Gentleman'."

Moss and this car will be the guests of honour at the 2011 Chelsea AutoLegends show on September 4, for which the themes will be Le Mans and the Swinging Sixties, along with eight times World Motorcycle champion Phil Read and a host of drivers and riders from the past.

The cars, however, will be the real stars with more than 30 classic Le Mans racers on display, brutal Group B rally cars, classic motorcycle, the ten most significant road cars of all time and 50th birthday celebrations for two 1960s cars, the Jaguar E-type and the Mini-Cooper.

But how does Moss remember the Swinging Sixties?

"They were fabulous times," he recalled, the twinkle still very much in his eye.

"It was all about spreading a little happiness - and as for the clothes, well… there were always plenty of miniskirts out and about!"
