Johannesburg - It’s Rand Show time, and this year’s show, which opens on Friday 18 April and ends on Monday 28 April, promises plenty of action for the petrolhead.
Held again at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec, fans can look forward to the Pit Bull International Xtreme Motorshow, which will run for seven days only - from 18 to 21 April, and from 26 to 28 April, at 11am and 2pm.
According to organisers the show is more than just a display of extreme motoring, but blends comedy and acrobatic agility into an entertaining package perfect for the whole family.
The Classic World of Motoring in Hall 5 will this year showcase 120 classic cars, ranging from humble 1950s Beetles to iconic sports machinery.
There will be a special supercar area, showing both modern and classic examples.
A special drive through the hall will also honour the Ford Mustang, which celebrates its 50th birthday this month.
Motoring journalist Stuart Johnston, who is co-hosting the classic car show in Hall 5, said: “We will outline the history of the car and interview owners of the iconic, first generation Pony Car.
“Not only will we have the iconic 1965 fastback and convertible models, but we will have later examples of the Mustang at the show too.
“Despite the fact that the Mustang has only been available here on special import as a left-hand-drive car, it is estimated that more than 1000 of these cars made it to South Africa during the past half century,” concluded Johnston.
STREETBIKE STUNTING
If streetbike stunting is your thing, go check out the XDL SA Street Jam (at noon and 3pm, 18 to 21 April and 26 to 28 April; 3pm from 22 to 25 April).
Billed as a non-stop streetbike stunting show, the event will feature stunt-riders competing for glory in head-to-head battles, and testing their skills in wheelies and burnouts.
For those of you who like a bit of tyre smoke, the drifting displays promise some serious sideways action. Or shell out R150 and jump into the six-litre V8 Chev Lumina with a stunt driver for a proper first-hand experience.
The 2014 Rand Show runs from 9am to 7pm daily. Adults pay R100, pensioners and teens R50, kids R20, and under sixes enter free. Tickets are available at the gate or through Computicket .
