Johannesburg - Johannesburg Metro (JMPD) police officers arrested 556 drivers for drunken driving during various operations over the Easter weekend, metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said on Sunday.

Minaar said JMPD held a number of road blocks across the Metro.

“All drunken drivers had to be taken for blood samples then detained at various police stations before being released on bail of R1 500 each.”

There were also 39 motorists arrested for speeding, the highest speed recorded being 180km in a Jaguar on the N1 South in Midrand on Sunday.

According to Minnaar, the man was allegedly rushing to church where he was meant to be the best man at a wedding.

“The groom was arrested shortly after in a Proton, driving at 161km/h in a 120km/h zone.” Wayne said.
