Harare - Some 15 people were seriously injured Saturday when war veterans attacked anti-government demonstrators in central Harare, protest organiser Brian Kagoro told the official ZIANA news agency.

There was no immediate confirmation from police or authorities.

Earlier, riot police fired teargas and military helicopters circled overhead as some 300 war veterans armed with clubs and rocks attacked up to 3 000 anti-government demonstrators.

The multiracial crowd of demonstrators, including elderly couples and families marching hand in hand, had defied police to march through the capital denouncing President Robert Mugabe's regime as repressive and lawless. - Sapa-AFP
