Ouagadougou - At least 35 people died in Burkina Faso when a truck carrying fuel to neighbouring Ivory Coast collided with a bus and burst into flames near the border town of Niangoloko, police said on Thursday.

Road accidents are frequent in the West African country, where roads are poorly maintained, safety regulation is lax and vehicles are often overloaded with passengers and freight.

"Eight people were taken to hospital and are in a serious condition," a police spokesperson in the capital Ouagadougou, some 500km north-east of the border town, said.

The accident happened on Tuesday night.
