Nairobi - A Kenyan radio station that faked the kidnapping of its most popular disc jockey in a publicity stunt has apologised for upsetting its listeners, some of whom called up in tears.

Kiss FM said on Wednesday that Caroline Mutoko, the popular morning presenter, was kidnapped on her way to work by a fan calling himself "The Iceman".

A number of media organisations - including Reuters - called the station to check the report and were told by managing director Patrick Quarcoo that the kidnapping was for real.

But Quarcoo has now admitted it was a publicity stunt which went wrong.

"We had listeners crying on the air, jamming our phone lines and turning up at our studios," Quarcoo said in a statement.

"We're very sorry for any distress caused and would like to stress that Caroline is absolutely fine." - Reuters
