Maputo - A Mozambican businessman was arrested on the Mozambican and Swazi border for the possession of R18-million in cash, Mozambican state media reported on Wednesday.

Swazi police detained businessman Momed Khalid Ayoob on December 1 at the Matsapa Airport from where he intended to travel to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, according to the Noticias newspaper.

Ayoob was released last Thursday on bail amounting to R400 000, the paper reported, citing Swazi media sources.

Mozambican authorities arrested the businessman when he tried to return to Mozambique via the Goba border post on Monday, the head of Mozambique police's criminal investigation unit, Carlos Come, told the newspaper.

Ayoob was arrested for taking more than the allowed amount of cash out of Mozambique, the newspaper reported.

A series of United States cables leaked by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks allege the Ayoob family's involvement in drug trafficking networks through Mozambique and southern Africa. - Sapa
