Lagos - Nigeria's no-nonsense President Olusegun Obasanjo gave a public flogging to an overzealous security aide, the Guardian newspaper reported Saturday.

He disciplined the unnamed security aide during an official visit he paid to the central state of Kogi on Thursday and Friday, the paper said.

It said Obasanjo, angered when the man began flogging people who had gathered near him, seized his cane and gave him some lashes with it.

Obasanjo, a retired general, is a known disciplinarian.

He was Nigeria's military ruler from 1976 to 1979 before handing over power to a civilian president. He was elected president in democratic elections last year after spending three years in prison under the dictator Sani Abacha. - Sapa-AFP
