Port Elizabeth – Port Elizabeth police in the Eastern Cape are investigating a case of attempted murder and arson following a petrol bomb attack at the Blue Ribbon Bakery in Walmer.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said an unknown number of suspects threw three petrol bombs at the premises and fired two shots during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Naidu said the premises recently closed down and there was only a security guard inside the premises at the time. The security guard was not injured and there was no damage to the property. No arrests have been made.

Earlier this week employees of the Blue Ribbon bakery in Port Elizabeth protested outside a branch in Korsten. According to reports, the decision to close the bakery and use it instead as a depot, meant that 61 employees would be retrenched.

Police could not confirm if the arson attack was in fact linked to the strike but were probing the possibility.
