Durban - Metro police in eThekwini are investigating how batteries and new tyres disappear from their cars, the Witness newspaper reported on Monday.

The newspaper quoted Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi as saying that a number of internal investigations were under way.

The report quoted an unnamed senior officer as saying that a police vehicle with brand new tyres would return to base with worn tyres.

“It's clear that tyres are being stripped and sold. As officers come back to change shifts, no one notices,” he said.

He said there was no explanation as to how vehicles on police premises “lose” batteries while parked there. - Sapa
