Cape Town -

The body of an unknown woman was found in the moat of The Castle on Sunday afternoon.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut confirmed that a inquest case docket had been opened after the woman’s body was found shortly after midday.

Traut said: “The cause of death is still unknown but we are investigating the possibility that she drowned.”

Police and forensic pathologists were on the scene and witnesses claim the woman was a local homeless woman who slept on the streets around the Castle and the Grand Parade.

A group of homeless people who were present when the body was found claimed the woman went by the name of Linda and had a child.

Police confirmed that they knew the first name of the woman, but were not yet releasing the details of her identity.
