Cape Town - Members of of the Special Task Team investigating jailed Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir have been promoted.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said that every member of the investigating team will be moved “one rank up”.

Krejcir has been in prison since November 2012 and was last month found guilty of attempted murder, kidnapping and dealing in drugs.

Its believed he was recently planning a dramatic prison escape which was foiled when his cell was searched and a gun and several cellphones were found.

Krejcir also faces a charge of murder in another case. He’s accused, with four others, of murdering drug trafficker Sam Issa in October 2013.

Phiyega told the briefing that police “get very little recognition for their perserverance”.

It was with this in mind that she promoted the members.

Phiyega said “given where we are with the investigation, we can say with confidence that Krejcir is going to spend time behind bars”.

“He knows it and that is why he is trying to escape,” she said.
