CAPE TOWN- South African schools have been closed for over a month and for many learners, the lockdown has presented some challenges.

To help schoolgoers feel connected and share their own lockdown experiences, Cannons Creek Radio broadcasts live daily from 7:30 am to 8:30 am, then again from 12:30 to 2 pm.

The radio presenters are learners from Cannons Creek, an independent school in Pinelands, Cape Town, and they keep kids connected to their friends, classmates, teachers and the broader community.

Cannons Creek Radio first started online radio earlier in 2019, little did they know that it would become a helpful resource for learners during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Head of School Radio at Go Radio Ingrid von Stein says that with learners completing school work from home and not seeing their peers, they miss out on their normal social connections.

"Here is a place where the kids can connect, hear their friends and request songs. We are able to broadcast online across the globe," she said.

Prior to the lockdown, the presenters were able to broadcast from a mini studio at Cannons Creek, however with the schools closed the presenters use Skype or their cellphones to broadcast while a teacher produces the show.
