DURBAN – As the country moves into lockdown level 3, many business sectors that are major contributors to the economy will resume. The tourism sector, which is one of the major economic sectors in South Africa, will be allowed to resume.
The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries has recently announced that hunting, self-drive visits to both private or public game reserves and National parks, as well as recreational fishing are among the activities that are expected to resume from June 1.
In order for the public to participate in these activities, they are required to apply for permits. SANParks is expected to release a list of access controlled parks that will open to the public.
Auctions will be permitted to take place both online and live. Live auctions, however, will have to abide to the 50 people maximum lockdown rule. Importation and exportation of live and dead plant or animals specimens or products will be allowed under the restrictions issued by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Babara Creecy.
“While we understand that many nature lovers are keen to get back to our national parks and game reserves, it would be prudent to wait until the relevant authorities are comfortable with their state of preparedness to welcome visitors. All the usual protocols with regard to social distancing, hand-sanitising and wearing of masks will apply at all times,” added Creecy.
