CAPE TOWN - After a long halt due to the pandemic, the Smile Foundation has finally been able to resume their operations.
The South African non-profit organisation, Smile Foundation, focusses transforming the lives of children with facial conditions by providing free corrective plastic and reconstructive surgery within South Africa.
However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic which was followed by lockdown restrictions the organisation was forced to cancel pre-booked operations as all essential healthcare resources had to be diverted towards fighting Covid-19.
“During the last five months of Lockdown and necessary diversion of resources to Covid19 duties, all elective operating lists were cancelled. These cancellations resulted in a large number of patients desperately waiting for their procedure to be done. We are very excited to re-start the weekly Smile Foundation operation list which will greatly help to decrease this backlog over the next months", said Dr Alexander Zuhlke, Senior Consultant of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
As operations resume, the backlog adds extra pressure to the organisation which has asked for further support with donations. To fundraise the Smile Foundation has launched a raffle campaign that could see you win R100 000 with an entry ticket only costing you R100.
The draw date will take place on October 2, 2020.
