Cape Town – Western Cape traffic authorities arrested 33 people for alleged drunk driving on Thursday night, safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said on Friday.

Eleven alleged drunk drivers were arrested at each of the three roadblocks set up in Athlone, Gordon's Bay and Muizenberg.

Smith said 145 fines were issued in Athlone and 72 fines were issued in Gordon's Bay.

"The City of Cape Town's Safety and Security department is working with South African police and the provincial traffic department to try to ensure safety on our roads over the Easter weekend.

The city will continue engaging in road blocks across this weekend in an attempt to bring down road fatality statistics," he said. Last Easter, road accidents claimed the lives of 156 people across the country.
