Damages of about R60 000 caused during a march in the Govan Mbeki municipality, in Mpumalanga, would be recovered from the local ANCYL, the municipality said on Monday.

Permission for the march, which was organised by the ANC Youth League, was granted on the proviso that the ANCYL and participating members be held accountable for any damages, spokesman Themba Motlhankana said.

On the day of the march, May 25, damage of about R60 000 was caused when a group of unknown marchers broke a 10 metre palisade, the seat of a tractor was set alight, and the windows of an Isuzu truck were smashed.

The screen of a petrol pump was also vandalised and the windows of a security guard's shelter were broken.

“The individuals who caused all these damages cannot be positively identified... (therefore) the municipality will recover the loss suffered from the Gert Sibande ANC Youth League,” Motlhankana said.

ANCYL Gert Sibande spokesman Sibusiso Mlangeni said it had not yet received notification of this from the municipality. – Sapa
