Uitenhage - A policewoman has been wounded in a shootout with robbers in Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape, police said on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said four armed robbers held up a 35-year-old shop owner and his staff at a Durban Street shop on Tuesday night, and ordered them to lie on the ground.

“The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime (vouchers) and walked out of the shop,” said Swart.

She said the police had been alerted and saw the robbers shortly after they left the shop. A shoot-out ensued.

A 30-year-old policewoman was wounded in the leg and was in a stable condition in a local hospital.

Swart said another police officer caught one of the robbers, a 33-year-old man, but the other three escaped.

She said the airtime vouchers stolen from the shop were recovered.

The arrested man would appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges relating to armed robbery and attempted murder. - Sapa
