Johannesburg - A doctor practising at George Mukhari Hospital has been arrested on 319 charges, the Hawks said on Thursday.

“We arrested a 49-year-old doctor at the hospital today for allegedly making illegitimate claims with the compensation commissioner in the department of labour between 2008 and 2012,” said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

The doctor, who worked as a general practitioner at the hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, allegedly made 99 illegitimate claims to the labour department's Compensation Fund and 218 illegal claims to Bonitas medical aid, he said.

“He made claims, saying people had been injured on duty. With Bonitas, he claimed that he had treated people [and made claims to the medical aid],” said Ramaloko. The claims involved about R500 000.

The doctor also practised as a gynaecologist while only registered as a general practitioner, he said.

Ramaloko said the doctor had been previously convicted for fraud in 1989 and 1991 also for making illegitimate claims.

The man would appear in the Brits Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
