Cape Town - The four men accused of murdering young BMW owner Olwyn Cowley, who had advertised the car for sale on the Gumtree website, are turning on each other.

Earlier this week, Jason Elias told the Western Cape High Court that there had been no plan to kill Cowley during their test drive of the car in 2012, and that he had been shocked when Cowley was shot. They had merely planned a joy ride because they had nothing else to do.

But, on Tuesday, Omar Arend, advocate for Elias’s co-accused Shawaal Staggie, said his client would testify that Elias had told him they were going to rob a man.

He said Elias had removed the firearm used to shoot Cowley from the glove box. Arend said Staggie would testify that he believed Elias came from a wealthy family, which was why he believed Elias wanted to buy Cowley’s car. Arend said that Staggie was a drug dealer, and Elias was a regular customer. But Elias claimed he had never been part of any plan to rob Cowley.

All four face charges of murder and robbery, among others.

The trial continues on Wednesday.
