Durban - Thieves snatched the tote takings at one of the Vodacom Durban July hospitality marquees on Saturday, sources said on Sunday.

Exactly how much money they got away with is still being worked out. Gold Circle confirmed the theft and said an investigation was under way.

A Daily News journalist was leaving the VIP marquee at the Miller Boomtown venue on the opposite side of DLI Avenue to the main grandstand at about 9pm on Saturday when a commotion broke out and racegoers began talking about missing money.

A spokesman for the venue was unable to give details on Sunday, but confirmed that “apparently money was stolen from the tote”.

There were several marquees and a stage at Miller Boomtown, one of the biggest venues at the race. Tote kiosks were in place in the various race-day marquees at Greyville to enable punters to bet.

* Three racegoers were also targeted by thieves, but their stolen property - a laptop, a handbag and a cellphone - was recovered and the suspects were arrested. KZN police said no case had been reported.
