East London - An intelligence-driven joint operation between the Hawks and the East London policing cluster crime intelligence unit led to the arrest of a 45-year-old African foreign national and confiscation of drugs worth about R1.9 million, the Hawks in the Eastern Cape said on Sunday.
"At about 6.30pm [on Saturday] the members pounced on the 45-year-old at Sohco Flats in Amalinda, East London," Captain Anelisa Feni said.
After searching his flat they found a safe in his bedroom laden with tik (crystal methamphetamine), cocaine, and crack cocaine. Hawks and crime intelligence members also found similar drugs hidden inside the bathroom sink.
The total street value of the tik was about R1.8 million, while the combined estimated street value of the cocaine and crack cocaine was R85,000.
Almost R12 500 in cash and equipment to manufacture the drugs were also seized.
The arrested man was expected to appear in the East London Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Feni said.
