Pretoria - A Pretoria prosecutor accused of murdering his girlfriend will remain in custody after the High Court in Pretoria dismissed his bail application on Friday.

Geoffrey Maponya, who has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing, launched an appeal after a Pretoria magistrate refused him bail in September last year.

The 31-year-old Maponya is accused of murdering his Zimbabwean girlfriend Precious Sibanda, 20, at his flat in Pretoria and stuffing her body into a dustbin.

He was arrested in April hours after the woman's body was found in a rubbish bin outside a block of flats on Church Street.

The court found there was a risk that Maponya would flee and not attend his trial, which was due to start on October 08.

He faces charges of murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice. - Sapa
