A pupil died and 19 others were seriously injured when their bakkie overturned on the N2 between Mount Ayliff and Kokstad, Eastern Cape, Arrive Alive said on Thursday.

“It's alleged that the driver overtook another vehicle and lost control and went down a bridge,” spokesman Tshepo Machaea said.

The accident, at 4pm on Wednesday, killed one female pupil and seriously injured 19 others. They were taken to the Mount Ayliff hospital.

“The driver has been arrested and charged with murder and drunken driving. We found him with a very big bottle of whiskey.”

The man would appear in the Mount Ayliff Magistrate's Court on Thursday. – Sapa
