A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a diamond valued at R56 million, Northern Cape police said on Thursday.

Captain Cherelle Ehlers said Dennis Bernard Kerrebroeck, a citizen of Canada, was arrested in Sandton, Johannesburg on February 27.

He appeared in the Strydenburg District Court on Wednesday, and his case was postponed to March 10. He remained in custody.

She said it was believed the diamond weighing 143.66 carats was stolen in Hopetown during 2008.

The diamond has since been recovered in the USA, she said.

Ehlers was unable to state how the diamond was stolen and traced to the USA, saying it was part of the investigations. -
