Johannesburg - Three of the nine alleged gunmen wounded in a shoot-out with the police in Robertsville have been discharged from hospital, the Hawks said on Monday.

“They were discharged on Sunday and are in police custody. They will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Tuesday,” said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

Seven suspected robbers were shot dead at the Protea Coin cash compound west of Johannesburg on Saturday.

“Around 5pm, the Hawks and the special task force confronted a group of 20 armed robbers who were about to rob a Protea Coin compound in Robertsville,” Ramaloko said.

“After they were cornered, they shot at the Hawks. Upon retaliation seven were fatally shot. Nine were injured and hospitalised.”

Eleven vehicles and a number of firearms were confiscated.

They would face charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and suspected stolen cars, Ramaloko said. - Sapa
