Port Elizabeth - Two awaiting-trial prisoners were killed during gang fights at St Albans prison in Port Elizabeth on Friday, correctional services said.

Sixty-five others were injured and 17 of them were taken to hospital, regional commissioner for the Eastern Cape, Nkosinathi Breakfast, said.

“They were fighting using all sort of objects. We are not sure whether they had been stabbed,” he said of the two men killed.

He said approximately 2083 awaiting-trial prisoners were detained at St Albans, and that some of them had been there for longer than five years. - Sapa
