Middelburg - The Democratic Alliance on Friday welcomed the sentencing of two men convicted of assaulting farmworker Victor Mlotshwa before shoving him into a coffin.

Theo Jackson and Willem Oosthuizen were sentenced to 11 years and 14 years in prison in the Middelburg High Court in Mpumalanga.

The two were found guilty on six of the seven charges on August 25; with charges including attempted murder as well as assault of another farmworker, Dalton Sithole.

The DA in a statement said it welcomed the sentence handed down on the duo, saying justice had been served.

"This sentencing indeed sends a strong message that racism in any shape or form will not be tolerated in South Africa.

"The DA believes that we must strive to build a society that is free of conflict and fear and that all South Africans must stand up against racial hatred and bigotry."

The party called on citizens to take a stand against racism, adding that it had no place in today's society.
