Cape Town - A 32-year-old Cape Town man who allegedly murdered his two-year-old daughter was arrested in Vygieskraal informal settlement in Athlone, police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said the arrest occurred on Thursday night at around 8pm.

“Detectives followed up information from the community and tracked the suspect to a shack where he was apprehended.”

Traut said the Phillipi SAPS members had attended to a complaint on Friday 19 June at the Hanover Park Day Hospital where the two-year-old baby girl was declared dead on arrival.

It was alleged that her father beat the child to death, and a murder case was subsequently opened.

Traut said the man would be appearing in the magistrate’s court in Athlone soon.
