Johannesburg - Four of the five men accused of the kidnap, rape and murder of two toddlers in Diepsloot appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

Spokesman Medupe Simasiku said the case was postponed to Thursday for the men to apply for Legal Aid.

The men each face two charges of rape, two of murder and two of kidnapping.

A fifth man, who was arrested early Friday morning in Alexandra, would appear in the court on Monday.

The bodies of two-year-old Yonelisa Mali and her cousin Zandile Mali, three, were found in a public toilet cubicle in Diepsloot at 5am on Tuesday after being reported missing at the weekend.

The crime sparked widespread condemnation and a protest in Diepsloot on Friday.

Angry residents stoned cars and burnt tyres, demanding that the fifth man be released to them.
