Johannesburg – A donkey cart was used to smuggle goods across a river into Zimbabwe, Limpopo police have said

Police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the donkey cart carrying groceries and other goods was spotted during an aerial patrol along the Limpopo River.

"A donkey cart was spotted from a police helicopter conveying goods towards the Zimbabwe side of the Limpopo river. The suspects, when noticing a police helicopter landing on the river bank, fled into Zimbabwe leaving the donkeys and the cart in the drier portion of the Limpopo river," said Mojapelo.

Last week, a vehicle that was reported stolen in Durban was abandoned in the middle of the river together with five donkeys that were used to pull it through the water.

The suspects fled into Zimbabwe after they were spotted by a police helicopter. No arrests have been made.
