Nine people arrested on drug-related charges are expected to appear in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The nine, aged 19 to 59, were arrested on Wednesday after two months of gathering evidence in the Sanathan Informal Settlement, Roseville Informal Settlement, Roshan Heights, Riverside Park, the CBD and Hazelwood in Umzinto.

Police Colonel Jay Naicker said officers had seized 20 pieces of crack cocaine with a street value of more than R2 000, suspected to be the proceeds of crime, eight cellphones and a sealer used to seal straws in which heroin was packed.

Detectives had opened 19 cases of dealing in drugs against the nine people arrested as some were implicated in more than one transaction.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said she would deploy task teams across the province to deal with drug dealing.
