It's the mother of all postboxes.

Locals claim it is the biggest postbox in the world.

But the tale of how an old water tank became the biggest tourist attraction in the dusty Northern Cape town of Calvinia is a story which screams of how 'n boer (can still) maak 'n plan.

A Weekend Argus news team drove through Calvinia, about 400km from Cape Town on the border of the Western Cape and Northern Cape, about two weeks ago and took some pictures of the monstrous postbox.

And this week we set out on an epic telephone journey to find out how it all happened.

Finally we tracked down a local doctor, Erwin Coetzee, who let us in on the story behind the dorp's brightest attraction.

The postbox was in fact an old water tank which had been situated at the Dutch Reformed Church's grounds.

Coetzee said the area around the water tank started looking messy, but instead of demolishing it, he took his wife Alta to the dilapidated monstrosity.

He asked her what it looked like and she answered curtly: "A postbox."

Coetzee said he got the local business chamber together, consulted the residents and a decision was made to convert the water tank into a postbox.

The Post Office supplied the paint and a sign-writer was roped in.

An official opening was held and every letter that is posted from the postbox now gets a hand-stamp with a flower as an emblem.

Calvinia is, after all, one of the main attractions when veld flowers bloom spectacularly during spring in Namaqualand.

The official opening was held in 1994 - nogal coinciding with a new beginning for South Africa.

Today the giant postbox is the most photographed place in Calvinia.

According to Coetzee, "not a day goes by without five or 10 people photographing it".
