Johannesburg - Children were taken out of their classrooms on Wednesday and made to join a service delivery protest in Bekkersdal, near Westonaria, said Gauteng police.

Constable Thembi Masango said the protesters headed to the police station and then to the clinic. They stoned both buildings.

“Police used rubber bullets to disperse them,” said Masango.

It was not known whether anyone was injured. Several people were arrested for public violence.

On Tuesday, 35 people were arrested after stoning the local police station, damaging three police vehicles and a disaster management vehicle.

Police also found that a petrol bomb had been thrown at the station, said Masango.

On Wednesday afternoon, there was a large police presence in the area.
