Cape Town - Train commuters got a shock Sunday morning when they discovered the body of a man at Kraaifontein station.

Nearby residents say Thomas Booysen, 22, was shot about 16 times in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A resident of Petunia Street, who does not want to be named, says the gunshots went off at about 5am.

“It sounded like the wild, wild west,” said the man.

“I was fast asleep when I was woken by the gunshots. When I went outside I found Thomas dead and another man shot in the leg.

“Thomas was shot in his face and his body. There was nothing left of his face.”

The man says Thomas was well-known in the area.

“He did smoke dagga, but wasn’t involved in crime or gangs. He used to run to the shop for us, and if anyone needed their pills from the day hospital, you could just druk on his nommer"( you could just call on  him for help)".

“He slept here at the station, and sometimes his girlfriend joined him,” he said.

Police confirmed the incident.

“At around 5.30am, a 22-year-old man was shot and killed at Eikenfontein railway station by an unknown suspect who is yet to be arrested. The circumstances are being investigated,” says Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut.
