Cape Town - An alleged quarrel turned violent when a man shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting happened on Sunday morning at the couple’s home at Asanda Village in Strand.

The husband shot his wife in the head, killing her at the scene. He then shot himself. But the 48-year-old survived the gunshot and was airlifted to Tygerberg Hospital by helicopter.

Laticia Pienaar, communications officer for the hospital, said the man, who could not yet be identified, was in critical condition. According to Pienaar, he was suffering from a gunshot wound to his head.

Police said they would open a murder case against the man and that the matter would be investigated.

“At this time we believe that the shooting was part of a domestic dispute,” said Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut.
