Cape Town – The ministry of higher education on Monday termed the torching of exam centres at the Tshwane University of Technology criminal and called on police to act against those responsible.
“The ministry condemns in the strongest terms the burning of property and other criminal acts at the Tshwane University of Technology. The damage to property represents an extreme criminal act and the law enforcement agencies must be mobilised to act,” it said in a statement.
The ministry said no grievance could justify destroying property and called for the expulsion of the students responsible for the damage.
“They do not deserve to be students of the university anymore. The department is in contact with the university management in appraising itself of, and advising, on the best way to address the situation. We are calling for people of Soshanguve to rise and protect the university.”
The university postponed exams after the three halls were torched and a security car was set alight at the weekend. Police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of malicious damage to property.
