A 28-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly poising her two daughters in Philippi, Cape Town, killing the youngest, Western Cape police said on Thursday.
After allegedly giving her children rat poison on Wednesday, she consumed it as well, Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi said.
Her one-year-old baby died at their Browns Farm residence. Her eight-year-old daughter was in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Their mother was in a stable condition under police guard in hospital.
She apparently visited her boyfriend, the father of both children, on Wednesday afternoon to ask for money for food, but did not get any.
The woman would face a charge of murder and attempted murder. - Sapa
