Johannesburg - The government and businesses should move away from dirty energy production because of the threat posed by climate change, Earthlife Africa said.
It held a protest march from Parktown, Johannesburg, to Anglo American's offices in the city centre on Friday.
“This protest is part of the international alliance and campaign against financiers of dirty energy, and also to remind corporations like Anglo American and Eskom to move away from coal electricity generation,” protest organiser Makoma Lekalakala said.
She said the United Nations' intergovernmental panel on climate change said in a report on September 27 that it was more certain than ever that humans caused global warming.
The panel predicted that temperatures would rise another 0.3 to 4.8 degrees Celsius this century, and that sea levels would rise between 26 and 82 centimetres by 2100.
It also warned of a higher risk of heatwaves, floods, and droughts.
“The report is there, the effects are there. We believe as a company (Eskom), they have an obligation, like every South African has an obligation, to contribute towards the reduction of the increase of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere,” Lekalakala said. - Sapa
