Durban - A well-known Durban musician has lost all his sound equipment after thieves broke into an outbuilding at his Mount Vernon home twice in one week.
Steve Fataar, a former member of The Flames musical group, was out at the time of the break-ins.
“I had been out rehearsing for a show with my band members on Sunday night and my wife and daughter were also out. When I got home at about 7pm, there was nothing out of place in our house,” he said.
An hour later his wife and daughter returned home, and there was a police vehicle outside their house.
“We did not call the police, so we did not know what they were doing outside our property. According to the police, our neighbour called them because he heard noises from our property earlier that evening,” Fataar said.
Only when Fataar was lying in bed later that evening did he decide to have a look in his storage room, which is about 100m from the main house, and discovered that some of his equipment was gone.
“I just had a weird feeling, so I went to make sure that everything was there.
“I was very shocked when I saw the gate had been broken and my equipment was gone,” he said.
On Tuesday, Fataar realised his sound mixer was gone and that the criminals must have come back.
Fataar said a pair of Laney speakers, worth about R15 000, had been taken, as well as the mixer, which he considers priceless.
“The fact that they came here twice already is very upsetting.
“How they are going to benefit from equipment they probably do not even know how to use is beyond me,” said Fataar.
SAPS spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said police were investigating a case of housebreaking.
He said no arrests had been made.
Friends of Fataar were planning a benefit concert to help him replace the stolen equipment.
